Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP, Honorary President of IPU
Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury has an impressive track record in public service spanning two decades and has excelled in various roles in parliament, government, political party and sports administration.
He is a graduate of School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and holds a Joint Honors degree in Economics and Politics. He has also received a Diploma in Law from University of Westminster, United Kingdom having completed the Academic stage for entry to the Bar.
As the 28th President of Inter-Parliamentary Union, he is the first Bangladeshi to have been elected to this highest office of global parliamentary leadership.
For his exceptional and outstanding leadership in promoting inter-parliamentary relations, Mr. Chowdhury has been recognized with highest State Awards – Order of Friendship - from the Russian Federation in 2017 and from Vietnam in 2018 – the first President of the IPU in its 128-year history to be so decorated.
Mr. Chowdhury has been a Member of High-Level Steering Group - Every Woman Every Child - a global movement to champion the health of women, children and adolescents led by the UN Secretary-General.
Mr. Chowdhury is a current Member of the global Business Leaders Caucus, an initiative of OECD’s Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) to realise Agenda 2030.
Currently, Mr. Chowdhury is serving his fourth term in Parliament and chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Ministry of Planning.
Mr. Hamdan Hossain Chowdhury
Mr. Hamdan Hossain Chowdhury is a Group Director for Karnaphuli. After graduating with honours with a mix of International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses, he pursed higher education at the University of Toronto. In 2012 he graduated from there with a double major honours in Political Science and Sociology. After graduating, Mr. Chowdhury decided to follow in the footsteps of Karnaphuli's success in the Cargo trade. He got his licences and worked as a freight forwarder in Canada until 2014, at which point he moved back to Bangladesh and joined Karnaphuli full time.
Outside of the Karnaphuli conglomerate, Mr. Chowdhury currently sits on the board of one of the largest publicly traded insurance companies in Bangladesh as well as on the board of a non banking financial institution.
Mr. Chowdhury is passionately committed to the Environment and is actively engaged in conservation initiatives around the world.
Ms. Raimah Chowdhury
Ms. Raimah Chowdhury is a Group Coordinating Director for Karnaphuli. Having completed the International Baccalaureate and graduating with honors in May 2010, Ms. Chowdhury pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. She completed a double major in Political Science and Religion and graduated with honors in 2014. After pursuing a Certification of Business Management from the University of Toronto, Continuing Studies, she then joined Karnaphuli Group in 2015. Currently, Ms. Chowdhury is responsible for strategic growth and development of the Group's activities in new areas as well as stream lining of existing areas of operation in context of implementation and oversight of annual operating plans.
Ms. Chowdhury launched the Bangladesh China Foundation for Future, the first of its kind, in August 2016. The Foundation is a youth based platform for students, young adults and working professionals promoting connectivity and exchange between the two nations. This initiative is recognized and assisted by the Embassy of People's Republic of China in Bangladesh.
Ms. Chowdhury is also the Founder President of the Bangladesh chapter of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA). WISTA is a global movement.
